Vientiane (Laos)

Hello from Vientiane ! :)

The trip from Don Det to Vientiane was long but easy. We stopped over in the small town called Pakse where we had  about 5 hours to wonder around and from there we took a night sleeping bus to Vientiane. It cost us just $22 (£13) for each. We never had such an experience as sleeping bus , so it was kind of fun, interesting and I have to say comfortable way to travel . We had really good sleep and we didn't even realized how fast we got to the Vientiane .
But when we just arrived to the station, there was a first surprise waiting for us just outside the bus...as usual in Asia when you arrive and get out of the bus you are greeted as a rock star ! All the Taxi or Tuk Tuk drivers starting asking you questions like where you staying , can I help you and etc. Sometimes you feel like there are a dollar sign on your forehead , so they try to squeeze you as much as they can , because you in new place, you don't know the city and so on...they put you on a lot of pressure, so you just agree with them...From our experience is  better collect your backpack first ,step a side and then try to shop around if you could get cheap ride to where you are staying.
Unfortunately this time for us was different then usual , we got out from the bus still sleepy , we explained where we need to go , tried negotiate the price a bit down , but unsuccessfully ... So we agreed with what it is and jumped in the Tuk Tuk . The driver took us  right to the city center, but we asked to take us to our hotel! So we asked him is it the right street? And if is not how far away we are from our hotel? And he was just like yes yes this is the City centre . We where like , but we didn't asked you to drive to the city centre ! So we told him the street we need to go once again and he just drove few blocks away and told us that this is our street ! And then he asked us to jump out and even to pay more money then we agreed ! So I was not in the mood to arguing I just gave him the money and he was gone ! Then after asking in the coffee shop near by how far is our place from here? And the lady looked at me strange and told me it is quite far away ! We got shocked a bit , but we checked our map and decided just walk , because it was early morning and we can't check in right now anyway. No more Tuk Tuk's my wife said in very strict tone ! So we walked...Apparently it was a long , about 4 kilometers or so. But the most important that we found our place.
Still to this day I don't know was it misunderstanding between us and the driver, or he was just a bad men looking for opportunity to rob tourists and this way welcome to the capital of Laos.

We stayed in hotel called Villa Sisavad for $16 (£10) per night .Nice place, clean and cheap, owned by the Laos family, with pool and complimentary breakfast.
I am not going to lie , we felt a bit down after "warm" welcome, but after all, first impression about the capital was wrong. As we discovered later, it was very nice, clean city. Its most quiet capital which I know! And probably, as we realized later, the smallest capital we ever been. Plenty nice restaurants, coffee shops , very nice river front park with the market opened every evening and with a plenty beautiful temples all around the city.

We visited COPE Rehab centre and I would like you to tell you mere what is all about, because I never heard about it before , but I believe its very interesting and you should now about it as well.
Basically COPE Rehab center is for people who lost there legs , arms or got serious injuries back in Vietnam war. When US military bombarded Laos and Vietnamese border for not allowing Vietnamese to migrate. That's fine ... But what really touched me back in COPE is that US military bombarded Laos so much , that a lot of the bombs and bombies still laying underground all over Laos and  apparently Laos now is most bombed country in the world! Its like a big ticking bomb. Every year , people still get injured or die , because of those barred unexploded bomb. Especially kids who accidentally found bombies by playing and digging the ground and farmers gets injured in the fields by planting rice. Its very big problem in Laos that people have to deal with all these problems until now and probably will in the future...Just because of U.S. selfishness and wish to rule in the power of God...
If you ever will visit Vientiane , you have to visit COPE centre , you will understand more about Laos history and that they been going through . There is a small museum and cinema room , where you can ask stuff to put you any documentary from the list, about how Laos people still suffers from US military bombing ...Or you can Google some more info online or search for some videos on YouTube.

After visit in COPE I was still thinking for long time about how lucky we are to have legs , arms . Be able to walk , dance , work or play ...We should be grateful every singe day for these little things in life that sometimes we consider just as normal, everyday things, that they even never cross our minds. For someone the life you live, it may be the dream life...So let's appreciate more what we have , because maybe some farmer in Laos just lost his legs in the field and he for the rest of his life will not me able to walk or work and provide food to his family....
In general Vientiane left good impression , if not that Tuk Tuk driver... Very interesting and quiet capital with some positive charm.
Next place to explore in Laos will be Vang Vieng famous for its nature.
So I see you in Vang Vieng :)

Love & Peace

Labas mielieji,
